Ramayana - importance in modern life

End of incarnation of Ramachandra was approaching. One day Kala – The time expressed his desire to meet Rama to discuss some secret topic. King Rama agreed. However, Kala kept the demand, that if anyone disturbs the meeting, then that person should be imposed capital punishment. Rama summoned his brother Lakshmana and told Kala’s demand.

While Lakshmana was guarding, Sage Durvasha came and wished his desire to meet Rama. Lakshmana told about the meeting and consequences of breaking the demand. Sage, who was known to his anger, threatened, either allow him to meet or get ready to annihilation of entire Ayodhya.

It was catch twenty-two situation for Lakshmana. If agreed he had to face his death, if not the destruction of the Ayodhya. Lakshmana like Rama was the follower of Dharma. He opened the door. Lakshamana faced consequence and saved Ayodhya.

Ramayana is the great epic. It has inspiration for all for all time. As per father’s wish, Rama left his rightly kingdom and went to forest for twelve years sacrificing his royal leisure. Despite knowing the hardships of jungle life, Lakshmana followed his brother. Princes Seeta, born and brought up in royal palace, smilingly escorted her husband with jute clothes. To help and protect Rama, great mother Saumitra allowed her single son to bear the hardship. In absence of her husband, Urmila had forgone all royal pleasure and lived like hermit. Keeping Rama’s shoes on throne, living like sage and eating roots and fruits, Bharata ruled Ayodhya. Keeping vigil like real protector, Satruguna stood by his brother Bharata. For justice, Vibhishana abandoned his brother Ravana and joined Rama. Without rest and caring for life, the entire monkey army built the bridge across Indian Ocean and fought with demons. Keeping the image of Rama in his heart Hanuman showed the real meaning of Bhakti.

To keep the words of common laundry man, Rama who kept his entire life for the upliftment of justice, truth and democracy, became ready to banish his wife. What husband said was right believed wife Seeta, and got ready to go back to jungle without tears. Like this Ramayana, describes the sacrifice and morality, in every step of the life.

Some say it’s the work of fiction and some say its just a myth, while for countless it’s the story of inspiration. Today for the sake of personal gain, people are ready to kill their own kins and countrymen. Every one knows it is hard to follow any spotless character Ramayana, but there is no harm in taking inspiration and practicing it. Today the world is torn between personal gains and power abuse. The person having power wants to conquer through any means and pays no heed to common men. Wife demands damage if husband doesn’t fulfill her wish. Seeing slight opportunity, husbands stray out. Brother help other if there is any personal gain and ready to dump relation if he has the power.

All religion tells us to practice Dharma. Dharma in correct meaning is Sheela or pure character. Dharma doesn’t mean religion or dogma. Dharma is universal. Let all of us kindle the light of dharma in our life. In its gestation period it is very vulnerable from mean and greedy poachers. However once it finds its root, like a banyan tree it becomes strong and withstands any turmoil protecting its owner.

Let there be peace everywhere.

Om shanti, shanti, shanti
